What Are Chufa Seeds & Why Do Turkeys Love Them?

Chufa (pronounced “chew-fah”) is a nut-producing sedge that grows small, sweet tubers underground. Deer, turkey, hogs, and other wildlife love to dig them up and eat them.

             Benefits of chufa plots:

  • Attracts deer and turkey to your property

  • Great for late-season feeding

  • Can re-seed itself when properly managed

  • Adds diversity to your food plot program

If you’re looking for a reliable way to hold wildlife on your land, a well-managed chufa plot is hard to beat.

Planting & Growing Guide

How to Plant Chufa Seeds
You can keep this simple and practical (update for your zone & experience):
1. When to Plant

  • Plant when soil temps are consistently above ~65°F

  • Typically April–June in most southern regions (adjust by your location)

2. Site Selection

  • Full sun

  • Well-drained soil

  • Avoid low, soggy areas if possible

3. Soil Prep

  • Disk or till the area to create a smooth, weed-free seedbed

  • A soil test is best, but chufa generally responds well to a balanced fertilizer

4. Seeding Rate

  • 25–50 lbs per acre depending on soil quality and desired density

5. Planting Depth

  • Cover seeds about 1–2 inches deep

  • You can drill or broadcast and lightly disk to cover

6. Maintenance

  • Keep weeds controlled early so chufa can establish

  • Once it’s growing strong, wildlife will handle the rest!
